God’s Faithfulness beyond Our Comprehension
We tend to think we’re someone special. In a way, that’s true—we are all special in God’s eyes. We are each uniquely created by God. None of us can be replaced by someone or something else. However, that doesn’t mean we’re so “special” that we can make deals with God. Even if we want to offer something to God out of goodwill, it is not up to us to decide what is acceptable or permissible—only God can determine that.
2 Samuel 7 gives us a powerful example. After David moved his capital to Jerusalem and settled down, it seems he had a moment of conscience. David said, “See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent” (v. 2). He had already built his palace—what we now call the City of David—but the ark of God still remained in a tent. This made David uncomfortable. So, he decided to build a house for God—a temple.
Everything seemed promising. It appeared to be only a matter of time before David would begin constructing the temple in Jerusalem, which would symbolically mark the full establishment of his kingdom. No ancient king would want to rule without honoring his patron deity. And what god wouldn’t welcome such an offering from a faithful servant?
But God is not like other gods. God is beyond our comprehension. God did not allow
David to build the temple. Instead, God turned the tables and made a promise: He would build a
house for David—meaning, a lasting dynasty. How often do we assume we understand God or
think we can influence Him? But God’s faithfulness goes far beyond our expectations, and it
cannot be matched by ours. That is who our God is.
