In 1875 the Rev Thomas Stanford along with the E. R Barcus family established a Methodist Church, school and cemetery at Richey’s Switch about 8 miles west of Hewitt. Five acres of land were donated to them by Rev. Stanford’s daughter and son-in-law, Martha & Thomas Richey.
Sometime before 1895 Methodists and Baptists together formed a Sunday School in Hewitt. The Hewitt Methodist Church was founded in 1900 and the Texas Northwest Conference appointed the Rev. Stephen W. Turner to the newly formed Hewitt Circuit. In 1902 Stanford Chapel disbanded and some of its members joined Hewitt Methodist Church. The Stanford Tabernacle was moved to Hewitt in 1922 and was used for revivals during the summer for several years. In 1953 Hewitt Methodist Church became a full station.
In the spring of 1968 Hewitt Methodist Church became Hewitt First United Methodist Church when the Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church to form The United Methodist Church. The Hewitt congregation joyfully celebrated its Centennial in 2000. In November 2022 the congregation of Hewitt FUMC chose to disaffiliate from The United Methodist Church to join a new denomination, The Global Methodist Church, and restore its name to Hewitt Methodist Church.
Hewitt Methodist Church is 123 years old, and descendants of our founding fathers still attend the church today.
